Mokichi
Okada was born in Tokyo in 1882, at a time when Japan,
in an effort to transform itself into a modern nation,
was in the process of embracing the ideas, science,
and technology of the West. The period from the late-19th
century to the mid-20th century was filled with worldwide
unrest - wars, economic crises, and other calamities.
Seeing this, Okada realized that material prosperity
does not necessarily lead to happiness.
Although
he was an avowed atheist when he was young, the severe
setbacks he encountered in his life, caused him to inquire
about the age-old philosophical questions: the mysteries
of the universe, what it means to be a human beings,
life and death, sickness and health. Thus, began his
investigations.
As Okada considered the mysteries of life, he clarified
the existence of the non-material, which exists in the
natural world but cannot be perceived by the five senses.
He used the word spirit when referring to the
non-material because there is no other appropriate term
to describe it. However, he made a clear distinction
between his view of spirit and the views commonly
shared by religionists and spiritual researchers about
spirit and spiritual phenomena. He persistently
placed the idea of spirit in the category of
science, and said that it conforms to the laws and principles
that he discovered through his practical research. He
predicted that science of the future would develop to
such a high degree that it would be able to comprehend
spirit, and material science would observe
new developments under the name of gspiritual science.h
Pursuing his researches on this gspiritual science,h
Okada concluded that it should be possible to create
a civilization in which manfs healthful life will be
guaranteed, and the human life span will be extended.
He discovered that there are two basic laws that govern
all the phenomena of nature: 1) the law of predominance
of spiritual element over the physical element, so that
what occurs on the spiritual side is reflected on the
physical side; and 2) the law of their inseparableness.
To utilize this gspiritual scienceh in practical ways
for daily living, Okada conducted research in the areas
of agriculture, health, and art. In each area, he formulated
methods to practice the essence of gspiritual scienceh
- namely, Nature Farming, Okada Purifying Therapy and
for art and culture, he showed that working with flowers
and conducting the tea ceremony are very handy methods
for enjoying art and culture in our daily living.

From his viewpoint of gspiritual
science,h and based on his observation of life
activities in nature, Okada discovered that soil
has a very important power within itself to produce
food. Therefore, as the human being can thrive
only by living in harmony with nature, if our
agricultural methods respect soil and enhance
its power, our food will always be rich in natural
energy that nourishes and supports our health.
According to Okadafs early discoveries, Nature
Farming results in increased production and produces
healthy crops with abundant life energy. With
the help of many farmers, he proved that decreasing
toxic residues from soil and seeds (acquired from
synthetic fertilizers and pesticides) resulted
in a gradual increase of both quality and quantity
of crops.
Okada also discovered that healthy and uncontaminated
crops are not only safe to eat but also contain
abundant life-sustaining energy.
In MOA, we have formulated Nature Farming Guidelines
and have started certification programs in Japan
and some other nations. |

Purifying Therapy is the core of Okadafs utilization
of gspiritual science.h He learned from nature
that just as our natural ecosystem cleanses itself
periodically with water (rain) and wind, our body,
which is a micro-cosmos, also cleanses itself
periodically. He believed that this cleansing
process for the human being is what people call
gillness,h which manifests as discomfort such
as fever, pain, and stiffness. It is through illness
that impure matters that have accumulated in the
body over many years are eliminated.
OPT is based on Okadafs theory that we have
life-sustaining energy because of our spiritual
body is combined with the physical body. Impure
matters in the physical body are reflected as
opaque areas in the corresponding spots of the
spiritual body.
Over many years of research, Okada discovered
that focusing the spiritual energy available
in the universe onto the affected part of the
body, will accelerate the dissipation of the
impure matters. The transmission can be done
from one person to another, or it can be self
administered. Seminars teaching the technique
are being given at various locations.

| Arts
and cultural activities enhance the spiritual
sentiments of the human being. Everything on earth,
including the human being, has a rich and full
life-sustaining energy (spiritual energy), and
this energy is demonstrated in beauty. Okada realized
that if we enjoy the beauty of nature and incorporate
it into our daily lives, our life-sustaining energy
would become rich and our spiritual sentiments
would be uplifted. Because of his understanding,
he collected art pieces and built art museums.
He felt that the Japanese Bontemae tea ceremony
and art of flower arrangement were good models
for incorporating beauty in harmony with nature
into our daily lives. |
